Married life is harmony, understanding, cooperation, and mercy between spouses. Success in it comes from God and then from determination. This is achieved through gentleness, cooperation in life's difficulties, fulfilling marital rights and duties, compromise, generosity, overlooking minor issues, abandoning discord and quarrels, and remembering that life is a short test and a passage to the Hereafter, and that marriage is part of that test in which we must succeed. It is like any other test that requires patience, effort, time, and sincerity to succeed. Spouses should remember that each has rights and duties that they must fulfill in obedience to God's command. Then, love is cultivated through tranquility, good listening, compromise, smiling, gentleness, and good companionship, living in obedience to God, cooperating in this, aspiring to His Paradise, and fearing His Hellfire. All of this unites hearts, makes them forget minor issues, and brings them together in the ranks of those journeying to God. There is no more boredom, hatred, or quarrels, but rather affection, companionship, and mercy.
