Wiping Over the Khuffs (Footwear)

A Summary from “Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar”

Definition

The khuff is what is worn on the feet made of leather and similar materials.
It also includes socks and similar coverings that cover the feet.


Ruling

Permissible according to the Sunnah and consensus (Ijma‘).
It is a concession from Allah (Glorified and Exalted) to ease hardship.


Conditions

  1. They must be worn in a state of purification.
  2. They must cover the area required to be washed.
  3. They must be lawful and pure.
  4. Wiping must be within the prescribed time period.

مدة (مدة المسح) – Duration

  • For a resident: one day and one night.
  • For a traveler: three days and nights.

How to Wipe

Wiping is done over the top of the khuff only.
Wiping the bottom or heel is not required.


Nullifiers

  • Anything that requires a full ritual bath (ghusl).
  • Removing the khuff or exposing part of the foot.
  • Expiry of the wiping period.

Start of the Duration

It begins from the first invalidation (hadath) after wearing the khuffs.


Important Notes

  • Wiping over socks is allowed if they cover the feet properly.
  • Wiping over bandages is allowed when needed, without a fixed time limit.
  • Wiping over the turban is permissible.
  • As for a woman’s head covering, wiping over it is only allowed in case of need or hardship.

This concession is a mercy from Allah, so observe its conditions to benefit from the ease intended.
