Zakat on Gold and Silver

Summary of Zakat on Gold and Silver:

1) Ruling:

  • Zakat is obligatory on gold and silver based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.

  • Whoever does not pay their zakat is threatened with severe punishment on the Day of Judgment.

2) Amount (What must be paid):

  • The due amount is one-quarter of a tenth (2.5%).

  • Gold: For every 20 dinars, half a dinar is due.

  • Silver: For every 200 dirhams, five dirhams are due.

  • Any excess is calculated at the same rate.

3) Conditions:

  • Reaching the nisab (minimum threshold):

    • Gold: approximately 85 grams.

    • Silver: 200 dirhams.

  • Completion of one lunar year (hawl).

  • General conditions: Islam, freedom, and full ownership.

4) Combining Gold and Silver:

  • Gold is not combined with silver to complete the nisab (according to the stronger opinion); each is calculated separately.

5) Zakat on Jewelry:

  • Zakat is due on:

    • Jewelry kept for storage or that is prohibited.

    • Permissible jewelry used for adornment (according to the stronger opinion).

  • Evidence: general texts, specific hadiths, and adopting the safer view.

Brief Conclusion:

  • If gold or silver reaches the nisab and a year passes, 2.5% zakat must be paid, whether kept as savings or jewelry (according to the stronger view), without combining one with the other.
