Women’s Work Between Necessity and Islamic Guidelines

Women share with men in responsibility and accountability, but differ in their physical and psychological nature. Therefore, the most suitable and natural role for them is stability in the home to care for the family—especially children—due to their need for affection and nurturing.

The Original Role of Women’s Work

The basic principle is that a woman remains in her home, as this is most suitable and safest for her religion and life. However, due to changing economic conditions, many women have been compelled to work, leading to social changes and the emergence of moral challenges and harm faced by women.

Reasons for Women Going Out to Work

  • Poverty and rising cost of living

  • Insufficient income of the husband

  • Absence of a provider (widow, divorced, orphan)

  • Neglect or refusal of financial support by the guardian

In such cases, a woman may need to work to provide for herself and her children.

Guidelines for Choosing Work

  • Choosing work suitable to a woman’s nature

  • Avoiding physically demanding or dangerous jobs

  • Staying away from mixed environments or those leading to temptation

  • Prioritizing family (husband and children) over work

Protecting Women: A Religious and Social Responsibility

Protecting women is a legitimate objective in Islam. Islamic rulings (such as hijab, avoiding adornment, and regulating mixing) are designed to safeguard women from harm and exploitation. Harm does not affect only the woman, but extends to the family and society.

Islamic Etiquette in Women’s Work

1. Dress

  • Commitment to proper Islamic hijab

  • Avoiding adornment, perfume, and attention-grabbing clothing

  • Wearing modest and loose garments

2. Behavior at Work

  • Modesty and balanced speech

  • Avoiding wasting time

  • Sincerity in work and respect for rules

3. Interaction with Others

  • With female colleagues: good manners, avoiding gossip and disputes

  • With men: within necessity, without soft speech or free mixing

  • With managers: professional interaction without negligence or overstepping

Work Ethics and Development

  • Mastery of work and striving for success

  • Developing skills through learning and courses

  • Maintaining work confidentiality

  • Commitment to honesty and sincerity

Practical Aspects of a Working Woman’s Life

  • Maintaining health through exercise and nutrition

  • Protecting oneself with remembrance (adhkar)

  • Preserving privacy

  • Cleanliness and organization

  • Avoiding disturbance in the workplace

  • Choosing safe transportation

Conclusion

  • The original place for a woman is the home

  • Work is only when necessary

  • If she works, she must adhere to Islamic guidelines

  • She should correct her intention so that work becomes a means of dignity and sufficiency, not a path to temptation
